{"id":174337,"date":"2023-03-06T15:38:58","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T22:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inbusinessphx.com\/?p=174337"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:38:58","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T22:38:58","slug":"morrison-institute-celebrates-40-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.inbusinessphx.com\/?p=174337","title":{"rendered":"Morrison Institute Celebrates 40 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-responsive-image panopoly-image-full\" title=\"Richard Morrison, co-founder, ASU Morrison Institute for Public Policy\" src=\"https:\/\/news.asu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/panopoly_image_full\/public\/richardmorrison_showcase_022823.jpg?itok=-96QF3Ag\" alt=\"Richard Morrison, co-founder, Morrison Institute, ASU, Impact Showcase, 2023\" data-delta=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arizona is a \u201claboratory for the future of democracy,\u201d and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morrisoninstitute.asu.edu\/\">Morrison Institute for Public Policy<\/a>, as well as the university where it is based, are vital contributors to that laboratory, Arizona State University President Michael Crow recently told friends and supporters of the institute.<\/p>\n<p>The institute celebrated its 40th anniversary with a Feb. 28 Impact Showcase at the at the Helios Education Campus, which offered presentations of its key research initiatives and community partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/search.asu.edu\/profile\/66195\">Crow<\/a>\u00a0was joined by Paul Luna,\u00a0Helios Foundation president and CEO; <a href=\"https:\/\/search.asu.edu\/profile\/95982\">Jacob Moore<\/a>,\u00a0Morrison Institute advisory board chair and ASU associate vice president for tribal relations;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.asu.edu\/profile\/1149834\">Andrea Whitsett<\/a>, Morrison\u00a0Institute executive director; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morrisoninstitute.asu.edu\/board-member\/richard-n-morrison\">Richard Morrison<\/a>,\u00a0Morrison Institute co-founder, who\u00a0all gave remarks at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Crow praised the institute for its nonpartisan, fact-based research into complex issues, particularly as many are speaking against the U.S.\u00a0Constitution and denying election results, though such people have appeared throughout the nation\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe difference is, how do you move forward with all that going on? And what you see in Arizona is unbelievable progress, I would say, not because\u00a0Morrison is a part of ASU, but because of the approach Morrison takes, really\u00a0tackling complicated\u00a0questions, (saying) let\u2019s hold nothing back. Let\u2019s call the facts the facts,\u201d Crow said.<\/p>\n<p>The institute and its many published research reports and activities have also informed how the university itself is designed, and have empowered its designers, including Crow himself, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do they do that? They do it by telling us what the people think, what the people want, what the ambitions are, what the arguments are, what the limits are, what the constraints are, and how they are perceived. The institute has a unique impact \u201con the work we all do in the community, and how we improve our community, from the leadership and research we are able to receive from the Morrison Institute,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(It\u2019s) only through partnership that any of us can be successful in proving the type of student outcomes and achieving our statewide goals that we have, that so many of you, and the Morrison Institute and ASU are committed to helping to improve and drive that increased success for all of our students,\u201d Luna said.<\/p>\n<p>Luna praised the data the institute provides decision-makers, mentioning one of the institute\u2019s best-known and most far-reaching reports, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/morrisoninstitute.asu.edu\/node\/98\">Five Shoes Waiting to Drop on Arizona&#8217;s Future<\/a>,\u201d issued in 2001, which he said highlighted the challenges Arizonans face in improving education outcomes. But the report also provided perspective about Latino students, the largest demographic of students in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Challenges to serve that demographic continue today, said Luna, who said serving Latino students will improve outcomes for all students, regardless of \u201cbackground, ethnicity or community.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>\u2018The reason we are in this room\u2019<\/h4>\n<p>Whitsett told the gathering she was proud to lead an organization that is so well aligned with the aims of the ASU Charter, and thanked many who lent her and the institute a \u201cguiding hand,\u201d including her predecessors, the Morrison Institute advisory board and her staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take so seriously being good stewards of the institute and its reputation and the trust we have earned in this state,\u201d Whitsett said. \u201cIt is affirming to see how many of you also find the Morrison Institute to be a real treasure in Arizona, a valued and unique asset, and one that contributes to our having an informed citizenry and a healthy, thriving democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitsett gave special thanks to Richard Morrison and to his parents, whose generous gift in the early 1980s created the Morrison Institute, calling Richard Morrison \u201cthe person whose spirit of public service and foresight is the reason we are in this room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard, you and your parents, June and Marvin Morrison, did a tremendous thing in founding this institute,\u201d said Whitsett, who held many positions at the Morrison Institute before becoming executive director in 2018. \u201cYour determination to create a place for facts and policy ideas to flourish free from partisanship is remarkable.
