Most of us human beings have one.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals with disabilities often need\u00a0a workplace accommodation, perhaps a modification or an adjustment to their work environment.<\/p>\n<p>Small businesses benefit when they value and appreciate each person for their individual differences and experiences. \u00a0By investing in recruiting, hiring, and retaining talent, including people with disabilities, businesses can give themselves a competitive edge and demonstrate their commitment to inclusion and opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Creating an inclusive culture isn\u2019t hard, and the best starting point is the U.S. Department of Labor\u2019s website regarding \u201cEmployer Assistance and Resource Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first step is writing a good job description which should be used\u00a0to outline tasks, duties, and other expectations and identifying potential accommodations that can enable an employee to perform the job successfully.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the recruitment\u00a0process is to attract and identify individuals who have the best skills and attributes for the job available. \u00a0Ensuring that all qualified individuals, including those with a disability, can take part in the process, is essential to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to know where to look to find candidates beyond the traditional recruiting processes and businesses interested in hiring employees with a disability should begin by contacting their local\u00a0Workforce Development Board\u00a0(WDB).\u00a0 In Maricopa County, that includes the Phoenix Business and Workforce Development Board, the Maricopa County Workforce Development Board, or the Workforce Arizona Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Arizona WDBs are part of the Public Workforce System, a network of federal, state, and local offices that connect companies to the resources, including skilled employees with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>When interviewing candidates with disabilities, employers must follow certain guidelines.\u00a0 There are questions you may not ask job applicants regarding their disability or medical condition.<\/p>\n<p>To learn how to conduct an interview, read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/laws\/guidance\/enforcement-guidance-disability-related-inquiries-and-medical-examinations-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission\u2019s guide, \u201cQuestions and Answers: Enforcement Guidance on Disability-Related Inquiries and Medical Examinations of Employees under the Americans with Disabilities Act.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What really matters is an employee\u2019s ability, not their disability. \u00a0A job accommodation can always help an employee with a disability perform certain essential tasks, and the \u201cAmericans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\u201d considers an accommodation to be \u201cany modification or adjustment to a job or work environment that enables a qualified person, with a disability, to apply for or perform a job.\u201d\u00a0 This perhaps may include screen reading software for employees who have low vision, raised desks for employees who use wheelchairs, or other adjustments such as a work schedule.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are also federal tax incentives to encourage businesses to hire individuals with disabilities and offset the costs of workplace accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>The main federal tax incentives are the\u00a0Work Opportunity Tax Credit\u00a0(WOTC), available for hiring individuals from certain groups who have consistently faced significant barriers to employment, the Barrier Removal Deduction, whereby businesses can deduct up to $15,000 for making a facility or public transportation vehicle more accessible and the Disabled Access Credit, a non-refundable credit for small businesses that incur expenditures for the purpose of providing access to persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Please, also remember that most business owners \u201cnever regret hiring a Vet.\u201d\u00a0 The Veteran\u2019s Administration is another great source for disabled workers.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/inbusinessphx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Robert-J-Blaney-1-1-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-163469 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/inbusinessphx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Robert-J-Blaney-1-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Robert Blaney has served as the district director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/district\/arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Small Business Administration for the State of Arizona<\/a> since 1998.
